Printing:
This MFP allows PC users to print, copy, scan, and fax from and to a PC over either wired networking or Wi-Fi connections. With both USB 2.0 and 10/100Base-TX Ethernet ports for flexible connectivity and its letter-size flatbed scanner and 35-sheet automatic document feeder (ADF), the M127fw can even work as a standalone fax machine!
During our tests, the M127fw excelled at printing text and black-and-white graphics with sharp edges and excellent clarity, and produced top-tier scanning speeds–it managed to scan a 300dpi PDF to JPEG in 8.7 seconds–two faster than its category average!
We measured the M127fw’s sound levels at an acceptable 37 decibels (A-weighted), making it slightly louder than your typical printer yet not enough to be bothersome in most office environments.
The M127fw comes equipped with HP’s printer and scanner software, providing all of the capabilities you’ll need for basic printing and scanning needs. In addition, Readiris Pro 14 for HP (an OCR application designed specifically to work with HP devices) provides OCR capabilities that you can use when scanning documents or photos. In addition, its driver package contains updated firmware that fixes several vulnerabilities present at launch time; installation is easy for even newcomers!
Copying:
The M127fw features both a standard letter-size flatbed scanner and an ADF capable of handling legal-size pages, connecting via USB or 10/100 Ethernet and offering mobile printing so you can print from a smartphone or tablet when the printer isn’t physically nearby.
This laser printer delivers outstanding copy quality, with clean text and attractive graphics. Scan quality was well above average, with smooth midtone transitions and accurate color rendition. Unfortunately, its print speed fell slightly short of expectations while paper capacity was limited.
Contrary to some of our competitors, this model does not feature a duplexer or manual feed slot; however, you can print from multiple websites using front-panel commands, while its ADF can easily handle two-sided ID cards for photocopying purposes.
This HP product is an excellent value for any small business that simply needs basic copy, print, and scan functions without the need for high-quality desktop publishing or scanning features. Plus, its price point makes this an economical solution! However, for more sophisticated all-in-one devices we suggest looking into Canon MF4880dw or Samsung M2875FW as both offer superior paper handling as well as faster speeds than its counterpart.
Scanner:
The M127fw features both a letter-sized flatbed scanner and a 35-sheet automatic document feeder (ADF). Its software offers presets for scanning to PDF or JPEG format and email delivery directly, along with direct scanning capability. Unfortunately, OCR functionality is unavailable – thus rendering this scanner incapable of creating editable text from documents you scan into editable text formats.
At 300 dpi black-and-white resolution, we scanned a document into PDF and saved it onto an external hard drive in 8.7 seconds – nearly the average for its category. In photo printing tests, this device scanned an 8×10 image at 600 dpi in 37.8 seconds which is slightly slower than average for its category.
As a standalone machine, the M127fw offers limited features beyond printing, copying, and faxing. Unfortunately, it lacks features like manual feed slots, duplexes, and fax modems. However, its Web apps provide printing from various locations with front panel commands – something Canon and Samsung models lack.
The M127fw offers easy, standalone operation thanks to a 3-inch color touch screen for control, with its user interface being somewhat cumbersome compared to others we tested – for instance, we found up-and-down arrows for menu selection perilously close to the “close” button so we often closed menus when selecting options accidentally. Furthermore, its price is higher than other models tested, plus it lacks a 10-key number pad for faxing purposes.
Fax:
The M127fw successfully transmitted two test pages before encountering a “communication error.” This could occur if your fax machine shares its phone line with an answering machine or voice mail service that automatically picks up calls after certain rings, so adjustments to your settings might be required in this instance.
As part of your Fax menu setup, it is necessary to change the Rings To Answer setting to set how many rings must pass before your machine will answer an incoming call. In addition, set Distinctive Ring to two rings so your machine can differentiate between an ordinary incoming fax and calls from your answering machine/voice mail service.
VueScan, a free program compatible with various scanners, enables you to easily modify their settings yourself and will even detect your scanner automatically so it stays up-to-date with its drivers and software – saving both time and hassle in the process! You can download VueScan from our website; once installed you can change any necessary settings so your faxes go through successfully. Furthermore, VueScan will even give you the option of keeping drivers and software up-to-date – saving even more time & hassles than otherwise possible!
